The original Terra blockchain was launched in 2019 by Terraform Labs and its co-founder Do Kwon, building an ecosystem around algorithmic stablecoins, primarily UST (TerraUSD), which maintained its dollar peg through a mint-and-burn mechanism with LUNA. In May 2022, UST de-pegged in a bank-run scenario that caused UST and LUNA to collapse to near zero within days, erasing roughly $40 billion in market value. In the aftermath, the Terra community voted to fork the chain, creating Terra 2.0 (now simply called Terra) with a new LUNA token airdropped to pre-collapse holders. The new Terra chain retained the Cosmos SDK architecture and عقد ذكي capabilities via CosmWasm but removed the algorithmic stablecoin model. What caused the original Terra/LUNA collapse in May 2022؟
The original Terra ecosystem relied on an algorithmic mechanism where UST's dollar peg was maintained by allowing holders to burn $1 of LUNA to mint 1 UST, or burn 1 UST to receive $1 of LUNA. In May 2022, a large UST withdrawal من the Anchor Protocol yield product triggered a de-peg event. As UST fell below $1, holders rushed to redeem UST for LUNA, dramatically expanding LUNA's supply. This hyperinflation destroyed LUNA's value, والذي in turn made the UST-LUNA redemption mechanism worthless, accelerating UST's collapse in a reflexive death spiral.

In 2024, a US jury found Do Kwon وTerraform Labs liable for fraud. These legal proceedings are an ongoing source of uncertainty for the LUNA token وthe broader Terra ecosystem.
