Axie Infinity’s play-to-earn model required players to make frequent small transactions, breeding Axies, trading items, claiming SLP rewards. On Ethereum mainnet in 2021, gas fees for these transactions would often exceed the transaction value itself, مما يجعل the game economically unviable for the Southeast Asian players who drove its early growth. Ronin provided a dedicated environment where Sky Mavis controlled the validator set, eliminating gas fees for game transactions while keeping assets ultimately backed by Ethereum settlement.

In March 2022, attackers compromised five of Ronin’s nine validator private keys, four belonging to Sky Mavis directly وone to a third-party partner, وused them to authorize fraudulent bridge withdrawals totaling approximately $625 million in ETH وUSDC. Sky Mavis paused the bridge, disclosed the hack to authorities including the FBI, وultimately repaid affected users using a combination of company treasury funds وa $150 million fundraising round من investors including Binance. The bridge was rebuilt with stricter security requirements including hardware security module signing وadditional validators.

Following its infrastructure rebuild, Sky Mavis opened Ronin to third-party game developers. Games including Pixels, a farming RPG that drove significant Ronin user growth in 2024, Wild Forest, Lumiterra, وothers have launched on the chain. Pixels in particular attracted hundreds of thousands of daily active users at its peak, demonstrating that Ronin could support gaming activity beyond Axie’s own player base. The expansion into multi-game hosting is central to Ronin’s transition من a single-app chain to a gaming بلوكتشين.
