Zcash launched in 2016 from the Zerocoin Electric Coin Company, founded by cryptographer Zooko Wilcox with academic backing from MIT, Johns Hopkins, and Tel Aviv University. It was the first practical implementation of zk-SNARKs (zero-knowledge succinct non-interactive arguments of knowledge) in a production blockchain. Zcash has two transaction types: transparent (t-addresses), والذي function like Bitcoin and expose all transaction details publicly, and shielded (z-addresses), والذي hide sender, receiver, and amount using zk-proofs. كيف Zcash shielded transactions actually hide information?
Zcash shielded transactions use zk-SNARKs to prove that a transaction is valid, that the sender has sufficient funds وthe math balances, without revealing the specific inputs or outputs. The proof is computed off-chain وverified on-chain. The verification algorithm can confirm ‘this transaction follows all rules’ without seeing the sender address, receiver address, or amount. What appears on the بلوكتشين is a small cryptographic proof وan encrypted memo, not the transaction details themselves. Anyone can verify the proof is valid, but without the viewing key for the involved addresses, the actual transaction parties وamounts remain hidden.
لماذا most Zcash transactions still use transparent addresses?
Generating وverifying shielded transactions historically required significant computational resources وlonger processing times than transparent transactions. Wallets وexchanges defaulted to transparent addresses for simplicity وcompatibility. The Sapling upgrade in 2018 reduced shielded transaction proof generation time من 40 seconds to under two seconds, improving usability substantially.
