What is a Liquidity Sweep in Trading?

A liquidity sweep (also called a stop hunt or liquidity grab) occurs when the price pushes through a key level, like a recent high or low, to trigger clustered stop loss orders, then quickly reverses.

How It Works

Stop losses and pending orders cluster around obvious levels: round numbers, recent swing highs and lows, well-known support/resistance. These clusters represent liquidity, resting orders waiting to be filled. Institutional traders need this liquidity to fill their large orders. By driving the price into these clusters, they trigger the stops and absorb the resulting market orders as counterparty to their own positions. The price then reverses once this liquidity has been absorbed. A liquidity sweep often precedes a genuine move in the opposite direction. It looks like a false breakout: the price pierces a key level, triggers stops, then snaps back. Recognizing this pattern helps you avoid being the one who gets stopped out right before the real move.

Why It Matters

Liquidity sweeps explain why markets often seem to take out your stop loss by a few pips before moving in your intended direction. Understanding this dynamic helps traders place stops beyond liquidity zones and identify potential reversal points.

Common Mistake

Entering immediately after a sweep without waiting for confirmation. The sweep shows stops were triggered, but the reversal isn't automatic. Waiting for a structural shift (CHoCH or a strong displacement candle) after the sweep filters out sweeps that continue into genuine breakouts.

Example

GBP/USD has a clear low at 1.2650. Price drops to 1.2645, triggering all the stop loss orders sitting just below 1.2650. The market immediately bounces and rallies to 1.2720. The dip to 1.2645 was the liquidity sweep.

Stoic Insight

Seneca: 'We suffer more in imagination than in reality.' Being stopped out feels personal, like the market targeted your specific order. It didn't. Understanding the mechanical reason behind sweeps removes the emotional sting and replaces it with a framework.
