What is Change of Character (CHoCH) in Trading?

A change of character (CHoCH) occurs when the price breaks a key swing level in the opposite direction of the prevailing trend: a downtrend breaks a swing high, or an uptrend breaks a swing low, signaling a potential reversal.

How It Works

CHoCH is the mirror image of BOS. While BOS suggests trend continuation, CHoCH signals that the trend may be shifting. In a downtrend (lower lows, lower highs), if the price suddenly breaks above a recent swing high, that's a bullish CHoCH. A CHoCH alone isn't a guaranteed reversal. It's the first warning. Traders typically wait for confirmation: a pullback to an order block, a liquidity sweep of the old lows, or a follow-up BOS in the new direction. On lower timeframes, CHoCH can produce false signals because smaller moves are noisier. It's typically analyzed on the 15-minute or higher timeframes and confirmed with context from the 1-hour or 4-hour chart.

Why It Matters

CHoCH gives an early alert that institutional flow may be shifting direction. Catching a trend reversal early, before it becomes obvious, allows entries with tighter stops and better risk-reward ratios.

Common Mistake

Trading a CHoCH as a confirmed reversal without waiting for follow-through. CHoCH is the first warning, not the final signal. Many CHoCH events fail and the original trend resumes. Waiting for a retest or follow-up BOS in the new direction reduces false entries.

Example

XAU/USD has been making lower lows and lower highs all week. The most recent swing high is at $2,040. Price drops to $2,010, then rallies and closes above $2,040. That's a bullish CHoCH. The downtrend may be over.

Stoic Insight

The Stoics understood that first impressions can mislead. Epictetus: 'It is not things that disturb us, but our judgments about things.' A CHoCH is a first impression of change. The wise response is to note it and wait for confirmation before acting.
