What is Swing Trading?
Swing trading is a style that aims to capture price moves lasting several days to a few weeks. Swing traders use 4-hour and daily charts to identify setups, holding positions through multiple sessions.
How It Works
Swing traders look for turning points in the market, typically at support/resistance levels, order blocks, or after breakouts. They enter when the price shows a clear directional bias and exit when the move appears exhausted or hits a target. Unlike scalping, swing trading doesn't require constant screen time. Traders check charts once or twice a day, adjust orders, and let the trade develop. This makes it practical for people with other commitments. Swap (overnight) fees apply to swing trades since positions are held overnight. For most major pairs these costs are small, but for exotic pairs or during high-interest-rate-differential periods, swaps can add up over multi-week holds.
Why It Matters
Swing trading captures larger moves (50-200+ pips) than scalping while requiring far fewer trades and less emotional intensity. For many retail traders, it's a practical middle ground: fewer decisions, larger moves, less emotional wear.
Common Mistake
Checking a swing trade every hour and adjusting the stop based on intraday noise. Swing trades are designed to unfold over days. Micromanaging them on lower timeframes undermines the original thesis and often results in exiting before the move completes.
Example
A swing trader identifies a bullish CHoCH on the daily EUR/USD chart and a demand zone at 1.1020. They set a buy limit at 1.1025 with a stop at 1.0980 (45 pips) and a target at 1.1150 (125 pips). The trade takes 5 days to hit the target, a 2.8:1 R:R.
