About Arbitrum (ARB/USD)

Arbitrum was developed by Offchain Labs and launched its mainnet in 2021. It uses optimistic rollup technology to scale Ethereum, accumulating the largest total value locked (TVL) of any Ethereum layer-2 network, a position it has maintained despite intense competition. Arbitrum operates two primary chains: Arbitrum One, the main DeFi-focused chain, and Arbitrum Nova, which uses a different data availability committee model to achieve lower costs for gaming and social applications. In March 2023, Offchain Labs distributed the ARB governance token through an airdrop to early users, creating significant initial market activity. The Arbitrum Orbit programme allows third parties to build their own chains using Arbitrum's technology, extending the ecosystem similarly to Optimism's Superchain model. ARB/USD on StoicFX is a CFD, no ARB tokens are purchased or held on your behalf.

Key Price Drivers

  • Arbitrum One TVL fluctuations and DeFi protocol activity on the network
  • Arbitrum DAO governance decisions, including fee distribution proposals
  • Orbit chain launches and ecosystem expansion announcements
  • L2 market share competition with Optimism, Base, and ZK-rollup networks

Peak Trading Hours

ARB/USD CFD volume concentrates during the US session because of Arbitrum's DeFi-heavy ecosystem and the US-centric nature of most governance discussions.

DeFi protocol migrations, security incidents on Arbitrum-based applications, or major DAO votes can affect ARB at any hour. Ethereum mainnet upgrades that reshape the L2 competitive field are also key catalysts.

FAQ

Why does Arbitrum have the most DeFi activity among Ethereum L2s?

Arbitrum launched its mainnet early relative to competitors and quickly attracted major DeFi protocols including Uniswap, Aave, GMX, and Curve. First-mover advantage, a developer-friendly environment, and deep liquidity created a network effect that proved difficult for later entrants to disrupt. GMX in particular became a flagship native Arbitrum protocol, bringing significant volume and TVL specifically to the chain.

What is the difference between Arbitrum One and Arbitrum Nova?

Arbitrum One uses Ethereum as its data availability layer, posting all transaction data to mainnet. This maximises security and decentralisation at a higher cost. Arbitrum Nova uses a Data Availability Committee (DAC), a set of trusted parties that store transaction data, to reduce costs further, making it suitable for gaming and social applications where very low fees per transaction are more important than maximal decentralisation.

How did the ARB airdrop work and does it affect the current price?

Offchain Labs distributed ARB tokens to wallets that had used Arbitrum before a snapshot date in early 2023. The airdrop distributed approximately 11.6% of total token supply to eligible users. Airdrops often create initial sell pressure as recipients liquidate tokens, followed by a market re-rating based on fundamentals. The historical airdrop is largely priced in, but ARB's ongoing token unlock schedule, as vesting tranches release tokens to investors and team members, remains a periodic supply consideration.

Does trading ARB/USD on StoicFX give me any rights in the Arbitrum DAO?

No. ARB/USD on StoicFX is a CFD. Holding a CFD position does not give you any ownership of ARB tokens, and you cannot participate in Arbitrum DAO governance votes or receive any protocol fee distributions through a StoicFX CFD position.
