About EUR/HUF
EUR/HUF measures the euro against the Hungarian forint and is the most traded forint pair because Hungary's trade is overwhelmingly denominated in euros. The MNB monitors EUR/HUF closely and has intervened verbally and practically to prevent disorderly forint depreciation. The pair is the market's preferred vehicle for expressing views on Hungarian political risk, inflation dynamics, and the country's relationship with EU institutions. EUR/HUF also reflects the ECB-MNB rate spread, which drives carry positioning.
Key Price Drivers
- ECB-MNB rate spread driving carry positioning when the differential is wide
- Rule-of-law disputes and EU fund freezes weighing on investor confidence in the forint
- Hungarian CPI and fiscal spending shaping MNB rate expectations
- CEE risk contagion from Ukraine developments and EU-wide policy shifts
Peak Trading Hours
EUR/HUF is most liquid during European trading hours when both Frankfurt and Budapest markets are active.
European session (07:00-16:00 UTC), with Budapest hours (08:00-15:00 UTC) providing core liquidity
MNB announcements at 13:00 UTC and ECB decisions at 13:15 UTC can fall on the same day, creating concentrated volatility. Hungarian government bond auctions during European hours can influence short-term HUF demand.

FAQ
What is EUR/HUF?
EUR/HUF is an exotic cross measuring how many Hungarian forints one euro can buy. It is the primary pair used by European investors and businesses to hedge forint exposure, given that Hungary's trade is predominantly euro-denominated.
Why is EUR/HUF the most important forint pair?
Hungary's imports and exports are overwhelmingly invoiced in euros because the EU is its dominant trading partner. Hungarian corporates, banks, and investors hedge in EUR/HUF rather than USD/HUF. The MNB also communicates its FX policy views in terms of EUR/HUF levels.
Has the MNB ever intervened to defend the forint?
The MNB has used emergency rate hikes and verbal intervention to defend the forint during periods of acute weakness. In October 2022, the MNB raised its overnight lending rate to 25% in an emergency session after EUR/HUF approached 430. The central bank views disorderly forint depreciation as an inflation risk and is willing to act aggressively.
Will Hungary adopt the euro?
Hungary is legally committed to euro adoption as an EU member but has set no target date. The government has shown no urgency, and meeting the Maastricht convergence criteria, particularly on inflation and fiscal deficits, remains challenging. For the foreseeable future, the forint will continue to trade independently.
