What is a Sign of Weakness (SOW) in Wyckoff?
A Sign of Weakness is a sharp decline on expanding volume that pushes price toward or below the lower boundary of a distribution range. It suggests that supply has overwhelmed demand and that markdown may follow.
How It Works
The SOW is the distribution counterpart of the SOS. It appears in Phase D, typically after an upthrust has failed. Where earlier bounces off range support showed light selling volume, the SOW slices through on heavy volume. The range's character shifts from sideways to bearish. A textbook SOW breaks below the AR low with volume expanding on each bar. What separates it from a normal dip inside the range is the effort behind it: bars get progressively larger on the decline, showing that sellers are pressing with intent, not just drifting. If the upthrust created a lower high and the SOW breaks below range support, you have a structural shift: lower highs and lower lows. The range is no longer ambiguous. After the SOW, price typically rallies weakly back toward range support, now resistance, forming the Last Point of Supply. That weak rally is where short sellers position.
Why It Matters
The SOW suggests distribution is real. Before it, the range could still be reaccumulation or directionless consolidation. A SOW that breaks below the AR on heavy volume tells you the available supply has overwhelmed what demand is left.
Common Mistake
Buying the dip after the SOW because the range support 'should hold.' The SOW means support has structurally failed. The volume supports that read. What feels like a bargain is a breakdown in progress.
Example
Price drops toward range support on above-average volume and you mark it as a SOW. But at the support level, buying volume surges and price reverses back into the upper half of the range. That's not a SOW. It's a successful demand test. A real SOW cuts through support without meaningful buying response. If demand appears at the range lows, the distribution thesis needs revisiting.
