What is an Upthrust (UT) in Wyckoff?
An upthrust is a brief push above distribution range resistance that traps breakout buyers before price reverses back inside the range. It is the distribution equivalent of the Spring.
How It Works
The upthrust works as a mirror of the spring. Price pushes above the range highs, triggering buy stops and attracting breakout traders. That burst of demand is what institutions sell into. A genuine upthrust reverses quickly. Price spikes above resistance, then falls back inside the range as selling overwhelms the new buyers. Volume on the upthrust candle is often high, but the reversal matters more: if price closes back below resistance on the same bar or the next, the breakout has failed. The UT frequently appears in Phase C of distribution. It's the moment where the chart looks most bullish, which is precisely why it catches the most traders. Everyone sees the breakout. Few read the reversal.
Why It Matters
The UT is where distribution becomes visible. Before it, the range could be consolidation or reaccumulation. After a confirmed UT, where price breaks above resistance and immediately fails, the probability tilts toward markdown. It also gives short sellers a defined entry zone with a tight stop above the UT high.
Common Mistake
Buying breakouts above range resistance without waiting for follow-through. The upthrust exists to exploit that exact behavior. A clean break holds above resistance over multiple bars. A spike that immediately reverses is likely a UT.
Example
Price pushes above range resistance and you label it an upthrust. But instead of reversing, it holds above resistance for three sessions, retests the breakout level from above, and continues higher. That wasn't a UT. It was a genuine breakout from a reaccumulation range. A real UT fails fast. If price is building a base above resistance, let the thesis go.
Stoic Insight
Marcus Aurelius: 'The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane.' Buying the upthrust puts you with the majority chasing the breakout. The disciplined response is to wait for the failure and consider the opposite side.
