About Zilliqa (ZIL/USD)

Zilliqa was founded by researchers from the National University of Singapore and launched in 2019 as the culmination of years of academic research into blockchain sharding. Sharding divides the Zilliqa network into parallel processing committees, each handling a fraction of the total transaction load, allowing throughput to scale linearly as more nodes join. Early benchmarks showed over 2,800 transactions per second, which was extraordinary at launch. Zilliqa introduced Scilla (Safe-By-Design Intermediate-Level Language), a functional programming language designed for formal verification, a mathematical technique that proves a contract behaves exactly as specified, catching entire classes of bugs before deployment. The project has evolved toward gaming, NFTs, and metaverse applications with its ZILhive gaming ecosystem and partnerships with game developers. ZIL is used for transaction fees, staking rewards, and within Zilliqa’s gaming ecosystem. ZIL/USD on StoicFX is a CFD, no ZIL tokens are purchased or held on your behalf.

Key Price Drivers

  • Gaming and metaverse ecosystem activity through ZILhive
  • Sharding technology recognition as Ethereum pursues its own implementation
  • Staking participation rate and circulating supply lock-up
  • Scilla smart contract developer adoption versus EVM-compatible chains

FAQ

How does Zilliqa’s sharding actually work?

Zilliqa divides its network into shards, committees of validator nodes, where each shard processes a distinct subset of transactions in parallel. A directory service committee coordinates shard assignments and combines the results at the end of each epoch into a final block. Because multiple shards run simultaneously, total throughput scales with the number of shards: twice the shards means roughly twice the transactions per second, as long as the directory service committee isn’t a bottleneck. Early implementations achieved shards of around 600 nodes each, with throughput tested above 2,800 TPS at four shards.

What makes Scilla different from Solidity?

Scilla is a functional language designed with formal verification in mind, making certain smart contract vulnerabilities structurally impossible. Reentrancy attacks, which caused the DAO hack and multiple subsequent exploits, cannot occur in Scilla because the language prevents contracts from making external calls mid-execution and resuming in an inconsistent state. Solidity’s imperative model allows these patterns, which is why reentrancy guards must be added manually. Scilla’s type system also catches logical errors at compile time that Solidity surfaces only at runtime, reducing the surface area for bugs that pass code review.

Why did Zilliqa shift focus toward gaming after launching as a high-throughput DeFi chain?

Zilliqa launched in 2019 expecting to capture DeFi growth, but Ethereum’s ecosystem lock-in and the subsequent Ethereum Layer 2 explosion made it difficult for non-EVM chains to attract Solidity developers and existing DeFi liquidity. Gaming and NFT applications were more willing to develop on native Scilla because the security properties of a formally verifiable language are particularly valuable for managing valuable in-game assets. The ZILhive initiative and metaverse strategy represent a deliberate pivot to a vertical where Zilliqa’s technical properties match the use case better than DeFi does.

If I trade ZIL/USD on StoicFX, do I hold any ZIL tokens?

No. ZIL/USD on StoicFX is a Contract for Difference. You trade ZIL’s price against the US dollar without owning any tokens. To use Zilliqa’s network, stake ZIL for rewards, or play games in the ZILhive ecosystem, you would need actual ZIL tokens in a Zilliqa-compatible wallet.
